Nick Barnes – President

Shortly after moving to Canada from England I attended the University of Waterloo, Ontario, where I received a B.Sc. in biology. As it was one of the first Canadian universities offering a Co-operative program, I graduated with several years of job experience in a variety of locations across Ontario. I then moved to Winnipeg, and after several years as a fisheries field biologist in northern Manitoba I attended the University of Manitoba, where I received a M.Sc. in fisheries biology. From Winnipeg I moved to Calgary to join an environmental consulting company as an aquatic scientist, and worked across Alberta and Saskatchewan on projects such as the Oldman Dam and Rafferty Alameda projects, both of which were instrumental in changing Canadian environmental approvals legislation.

Returning to Winnipeg I worked as an environmental planner and then project manager for a national consulting company, on projects across Canada, from Nanaimo, to Thunder Bay, to Iqualuit, becoming a Professional Planner (MCIP) and Professional Biologist in two provinces (P.Biol., R.P.Bio.). I joined Manitoba Hydro in 2000, during the start of a new phase in major capital development, to manage the environmental planning and assessment of major projects such as the Wuskwatim and Keeyask generating stations. I left Manitoba Hydro in 2018 to establish Barnes Environmental Consulting, and have been providing services that include environmental assessment training and regulatory approvals for major clients and as a subcontractor for national environmental consulting companies.
